Getting started

Welcome to rumfish.net! This is a quick start guide for using the site.

Yes, yes, we are all semi-intelligent technical people, so is a quick start guide really needed? Yes and no.
It is my hope that our site is straight forward to use and does not require any effort to use, but this site is not built on a traditional forum, and while we try to match them for the most part, we do differ in a few ways, and have a few hidden gems of functionality that may be of use.

Registration

If you have not registered yet, you can go here to do so. All accounts require admin approval to try to keep out spam bots.

When registering, we ask that you fill out the "How do you know the group?" section so we can more quickly find out who the real people are and skip the bots. This section is only seen by site staff, and gives us a better idea of what all you should have access to, including our various gaming servers.

If you have not heard back from us yet, we may have missed your account registration. We try to stay on top of this, but there are a lot of junk accounts created by bots to sort through. If you did not change the "How do you know the group" section noted above, we will almost certainly miss your account, and you may need to create a new one, get in touch with one of us.

Game Servers

We normally have at least one private game server running for the group to play, free of charge. Past servers have included: Freelancer, Minecraft, Everquest, and Ragnarok Online.

Minecraft

Our main Minecraft server can be found at: minefish.net or minefish.com. Accounts need to be manually whitelisted, so if you can’t get on, let one of us know.

If you created an account here and included your minecraft login, we should have already taken care of this, but we do miss this on occasion.

Note about the current server: We will be deprecating our current map with the release of Minecraft 1.0 in November. We will keep it online and make the word data available for everyone to download, but we will try to get everyone to move over to a brand new map at that time.

Forum

Our forum allows a mix of content types to live side by side. Most users will only see a few of these, Thread and Photo gallery currently, but some have access to even more. These allow us far more flexibility that a normal forum has to display, filter, and have fun with content. Comments are flat for most content types, and are done inline. We support a limited subset of HTML for input currently, but are looking into expanding this in the future. If we are missing a tag you need, let us know.

Subscriptions

We support RSS subscriptions for keeping up with threads and comments on the site. These subscriptions allow you to exclude your own posts (you don't need to be told what you posted after all).
The recent comment and new thread blocks on the site link to preconfigured RSS feeds for you, but if you wish to customize your view of our world, feel free. Here is how they work:

Front page:
Front page news and promoted posts are available at http://rumfish.net/rss.xml or by liking us on facebook.

New threads:
[User ID] is your user ID, to get this just click your name somewhere on the site and it will be the number in the URL for your profile page.

Recent comments:
Recent comments have two modes, showing all posts by others, and showing all posts by others that are not in the given threads. For example, I don't keep up with who is winning or the word game in my news reader.
[User ID] is the same as above, [Thread ID] is the number after "node" in the URL, so node/3 is thread ID 3. You can exclude multiple threads by putting a + between them.
